Day 1: Tour leader will greet tour participants at the Mariscal-Sucre International Airport in Quito, Ecuador. Should there be time after picking up and accommodating the tour participants, we will bird some of the local birding areas including: El Parque La Carolina and its botanical gardens, El Volcán Pichincha and Cruz Loma Mountains. Night in Quito.
Day 2: After an early breakfast we will head up to the Yanacocha Reserve located an hour away from Quito on the slopes of the Pichincha Volcano. We will end the day at Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve. Night in Bellavista.
Day 3-7: The remainder of the week will be spent birding the extensive trails of the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve and surrounding areas of the Tandayapa Valley. At least one day will be spent birding the lower Tandayapa Valley. Another will be spent on the world-famous Nono-Mindo road. Other day trips will be to La Paz de las Aves Refuge (the home the Antpittas and the Cock-of-the-Rock lek, the Mílpe Bird Sanctuary, “La Cruce” and the Río de Silanche Bird Sanctuary.
Day 8: After breakfast and some morning birding on Bellavista grounds, we will start our long-ish “trek” to the other side of the Andes and La Selva Jungle Lodge. We will drive two hours back to Quito and the Mariscal-Sucre International Airport to catch an early afternoon flight to the oil boom-town of Coca. We will be met by La Selva Lodge representatives at the Coca airport and take ground transportation to the docks of the Napo River. Then, we will board a “canoa” and ride three hours up-river to the entrance of La Selva Jungle Lodge. A short hike and canoe ride through phenomenal and breathtakingly beautiful “birding country” will take us to the idyllic lagoon of La Selva Jungle Lodge, our cabins, and home for the remainder of the week. Guests are sure to “rack-up” 20 or 30 new birds before they even set foot in their cabins. Night at La Selva Jungle Lodge.
Day 9-14: There are many, many places to visit during our stay at the lodge. Tour participants will bird in tranquil lagoons, vast rainforest, and the enormous Napo River –a tributary of the Amazon River. One of the biggest thrills at La Selva is the 135 canopy tower which gives birders access to canopy feeding birds as well as perching Harpy Eagles and other raptors. Nights at La Selva Jungle Lodge.
Day 15: (Day 2 in reverse) On this day, after our farewell breakfast, we will make our way to Quito, first, on the Napo, then by air. Should there be time, we will visit some of the local birding areas in and around Quito. Night in Quito.
Day 16- The tour concludes this morning. The tour leader will ensure that each guest makes it onto his or her flight on time.
