What does “at-cost” mean?
“At-cost” tours are those tours which are offered to the customer for no company profit. The tour leader and company owners will earn no money from the tour. The per-person cost of the tour goes to pay the expenses of each group member including the trip expenses of Epic Bird Tours, Inc. employees. Often, Epic Bird Tours, Inc. negotiates discounts with lodges, transportation providers and field guides due to the research nature of these “expeditions.” These tours are often offered at %60-80% discount over other companies!
In what way are “at-cost” tours different from regular and traditional tours?
“At-cost” tours are essentially the same as any other tour save for a few things. Generally public transportation will be taken rather than the much more costly private modes. Often, in addition to Birdwatching activities, certain more touristic, cultural or non-avian naturalistic activities will be perused as well, such as whale watching, visiting ruins like Machu Picchu, and shopping at local arts and food markets. The feel of an “at-cost” tour is more relaxed, given the fewer number of Epic Bird Tours, Inc. customers. Participants are free to join the birding team for as long or as little as they please. Epic Bird Tours, Inc. will make sure that each participant gets to his or her home-bound flight safely and on time.
