Ecuador: Headwaters
of the Amazon

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Tour leader will greet tour participants at the Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, Ecuador. Should there be time, we will bird some of the local birding areas including El Parque La Carolina with its botanical gardens, Pichincha and Cruz Loma Mountains. Night in Quito.

Day 2: We will catch an early flight to Coca, on the edge of the Amazon Basin. In Coca we will be greeted by hotel staff and escorted to the Napo river docks and board a “Canoa.” A three hour ride up the Napo River will take us to the entrance to the La Selva Jungle lodge. A short hike and canoe ride through phenomenal “birding country” will take us to our cabins and home for the remainder of the week. Guests are sure to “rack-up” 20 or 30 new birds before they even set foot in their cabins. Night at La Selva Jungle Lodge.

Day 3-7: There are many, many places to visit during our stay at the lodge. Tour participants will bird in tranquil lagoons, vast rainforest, and the enormous Napo River –a tributary of the Amazon River. One of the biggest thrills at La Selva is the 135 canopy tower which gives birders access to canopy feeding birds as well as perching Harpy Eagles and other raptors. Nights at La Selva Jungle Lodge.

Day 8: (Day 2 in reverse) On this day after a farewell breakfast we will make our way to Quito, first on the Napo, then by air. Should there be time, we will visit some of the local birding areas in and around Quito. Night in Quito.

Day 9: The tour concludes this morning. The tour leader will ensure that each guest makes it onto his or her flight on time.
